High-Intensity Cybersecurity & Offensive Depths
Living off the Land with LOLBins
Living-off-the-land attacks use legitimate system binaries and scripting engines already present on a host, which lets attackers skip dropping malware and blend into normal activity. Because the tools are signed and trusted, hash-based detection fails and allowlisting needs care. Detection has to focus on behavior: unusual parent processes, encoded command lines, network connections from admin tools, and sequences that never happen in normal operations.
要点
- Baseline which LOLBins your environment actually uses and alert on rare ones running with network access.
- Block or constrain PowerShell, WMI, and certutil from spawning child processes where policy allows.
- Log full command lines and parent process chains, not just process names.
- Apply application control to restrict scripting engines to approved paths and signers.
- Monitor encoded or obfuscated command lines and unusual base64 or hex payloads.
- Correlate LOLBin activity with authentication anomalies and lateral movement indicators.
- Remove unused scripting engines and legacy tools from production images.
- Tune SIEM rules to chains of LOLBins rather than single events to cut false positives.
常见问题
Why do attackers prefer LOLBins?
They avoid malware files entirely, so file reputation and antivirus scanning never trigger.
Is blocking PowerShell realistic?
Blocking it outright breaks admin workflows; constrained language mode and logging are the practical compromise.
What is the highest-signal detection?
A signed admin tool spawning a network connection or writing to a user-writable path.
How do we distinguish admin use from abuse?
Context: time of day, source host, account, and whether the command matches change tickets or runbooks.
