IoT Security Hardening
IoT devices fail security in predictable ways: default credentials, exposed debug interfaces, unsigned firmware, and no update path. Hardening starts at manufacturing and continues through deployment. A hardware root of trust, secure boot, and disabled debug ports raise the cost of physical and remote attacks substantially.
要点
- Provision unique credentials per device and never ship shared default passwords.
- Enable secure boot with a hardware root of trust such as a TPM or secure element.
- Disable or lock JTAG and UART debug access in production units.
- Encrypt sensitive data at rest, including keys in flash.
- Verify firmware signatures before execution and reject unsigned images.
- Restrict outbound network access to the endpoints the device actually needs.
- Log security-relevant events and ship them off-device.
- Plan end-of-life support so devices are retired, not abandoned.
常见问题
Is secure boot enough?
No. It protects boot integrity but not runtime compromise or weak credentials.
How do I protect keys on cheap hardware?
Use a secure element where possible; otherwise accept limits and rotate keys.
Should I disable the serial console?
Yes in production, with a controlled recovery path documented for service.
What is the most common IoT flaw?
Default or shared credentials and unpatched firmware.
