chmod Permission Calculator
chmod (change mode) sets who may read, write or execute a file on Linux: owner, group and others. Type an octal number like 755 or tick the boxes to see the matching rwx string, what it allows, and warnings for risky combinations like 777.
How chmod permissions work
Each digit is one class — owner, group, others — and adds read (4), write (2) and execute (1). 755 means owner rwx, group r-x, others r-x. 777 lets anyone write and execute the file; 644 is normal for files, 755 for directories and scripts.
