Network Function Virtualization (NFV)
NFV replaces dedicated hardware appliances (firewalls, load balancers, routers) with software running on standard servers. The promise is flexibility and cost reduction; the reality is that virtualizing stateful, latency-sensitive network functions requires careful resource isolation, acceleration, and operational maturity. NFV succeeds when treated as a platform, not a cost-cutting shortcut.

NFV or SDN?
They overlap: SDN controls the network logically, NFV virtualizes the functions. Most modern platforms do both.
