AI Skills & How They Work

How Neural Networks Learn

Neural networks learn by adjusting billions of weights to reduce a loss function across training examples, using gradient descent and backpropagation. The idea is simple; the scale, data, and engineering are not. Understanding the mechanism is what separates using a model from trusting it blindly.

Nyckelpunkter

  1. A network is a function with parameters: inputs flow through layers of weighted sums and nonlinearities to produce an output.
  2. Learning means adjusting weights: the optimizer nudges parameters in the direction that reduces error on training examples.
  3. Backpropagation is the credit assignment: it computes how much each weight contributed to the error, efficiently via the chain rule.
  4. Loss functions define the goal: cross-entropy for classification, MSE for regression, and custom losses for specialized tasks.
  5. Data is the curriculum: the model learns patterns present in training data, including biases, noise, and gaps.
  6. Generalization is the real test: fitting training data is easy; performing on unseen data is what matters and is never guaranteed.
  7. Scale changes behavior: larger models trained on more data often show emergent capabilities not present in smaller ones.
  8. Training is expensive and finicky: learning rates, batch sizes, and data quality dominate outcomes more than architecture tweaks.

Vanliga frågor

Does a neural network understand language?

It learns statistical patterns that produce useful behavior; calling it understanding overstates what the mechanism guarantees.

Why do models need so much data?

To cover the variation in real inputs; sparse data leads to brittle, overfit models.

Can I train one myself?

Small models yes; frontier models need compute and data budgets only large labs have.

What causes a model to fail on new data?

Distribution shift: inputs that differ from training data in ways the model never learned to handle.
