Threat-Informed Detection Coverage

Detection programs fail in two directions: too many alerts nobody trusts, or quiet gaps nobody measured. Threat-informed coverage fixes both by starting from attacker behavior and ending with tested, owned detections. This guide covers the paths that matter most in current enterprise incidents, including token theft, supply-chain compromise, living-off-the-land activity, firmware persistence, object-level authorization flaws, and prompt injection against retrieval systems.

Punti chiave

  1. Start coverage from behaviors, not tools. A technique that appears in three systems with different telemetry is one detection problem with three implementations.
  2. Prioritize identity paths first. Token theft, Kerberoasting, and delegated access bypass perimeter controls and produce some of the highest-impact incidents.
  3. Baseline legitimate administration before alerting on living-off-the-land binaries. The same tools appear in normal operations and attacks, and context is the only reliable discriminator.
  4. Verify supply-chain provenance at install time. Signed metadata, pinned hashes, and reviewed pipeline changes stop more attacks than post-hoc scanning.
  5. Measure firmware integrity out of band. A compromised host cannot be trusted to report its own boot state.
  6. Treat retrieved content as untrusted input. Prompt injection in vector stores works because models cannot reliably separate data from instructions.
  7. Test authorization per object. Broken object-level authorization survives route-level checks, so the test has to use two tenants and direct object references.
  8. Map lateral movement paths before the attacker does. Reachability plus reusable credentials is the actual attack surface, not the vulnerability count.
  9. Automate red-team simulations with scope, stop conditions, and a rollback plan. Automation without guardrails creates incidents rather than evidence.
  10. Close the loop from detection to response. A rule without an owner, a runbook, and a tuning history becomes noise within a quarter.
  11. Track precision and recall per detection. Coverage claims without measurement are marketing, not security.

Domande frequenti

Where should a small security team start?

Identity and exposed services first, because those paths produce the most incidents per unit of effort. Measure detection quality before expanding coverage.

How do I test a detection without a full red team?

Replay benign and malicious scenarios in a lab or staging environment, then run a bounded purple-team exercise against production with a rollback plan.

Do I need AI-specific controls if I run an LLM feature?

Yes if the model retrieves untrusted content or can call tools. Treat retrieval as input validation and tool calls as privileged actions.

How often should red-team simulations run?

Continuous, bounded simulations catch regressions better than an annual exercise, but only if scope and stop conditions are explicit.

What metric matters most?

Time to detect and contain matters more than the number of rules. Pair it with precision so analysts can trust what fires.
