Active Directory: The Directory Every Windows Login Depends On

Active Directory is the identity backbone of Windows estates: domain controllers, Kerberos authentication, group policy, and DNS as one service. Almost every Windows security conversation loops back to it, because whoever controls the directory controls the estate, and attackers know it. This dedicated article covers what AD actually is, what its admin disciplines are, and where its cloud successor (Entra ID) overlaps.

Key points

  1. The mental model: domain controllers store and replicate the directory, Kerberos issues short-lived tickets for authentication, and group policy pushes settings to machines and users; treat schema changes with care, because the directory schema is hard to reverse.
  2. Group Policy is the fleet-drivers tool: drive mappings, security baselines (LAPS-managed local admin passwords, credential guards), software deployment, and screensaver lockouts; GPO precedence is deterministic but complex, so documentation and staged GPO linking save far more time than they cost.
  3. The security posture decides estate survivability: privileged tiering (separate admin accounts that never touch email or web), time-bound elevated groups, and blocking legacy protocols (NTLM where possible, SMBv1 absolutely) remove the privilege-escalation paths exploited publicly for a decade.
  4. DNS is part of the bargain, and it is a service to protect: AD-integrated zones, TTL discipline, and duplicate-name hygiene; broken AD DNS produces symptoms that look like application failures everywhere else.
  5. Hybrid reality: Entra ID (cloud) and AD sync together via Entra Connect; password hash sync vs pass-through auth, conditional access policies on the cloud side, and hybrid join device states; the old-and-new mechanisms need an explicit security model, not default trust everywhere.
  6. Operations discipline: DC time sync is a correctness property (Kerberos breaks with >5 min skew), FSMO roles documented, backups tested for restore (authoritative restore is different), and monitoring for replication failures and suspicious event IDs, with event-log collection plus Sentinel- or Wazuh-class SIEM hooks closing the loop.

Field note

The AD incident that shaped our practice: one admin account that checked email daily, phished, and gave the attackers domain admin in a click. Tiering admin accounts and Windows LAPS after that took a month of patient work; it has since saved justifying itself twice with attempted lateral movements that went nowhere.

Frequently asked questions

Is AD still relevant with everything moving to Entra ID?

Absolutely for on-premis infrastructure, legacy apps (file servers, printers, legacy apps with Kerberos) and hybrid estates; Entra is the access plane for cloud services, not a blueprint migration for on-prem trust. Plan for coexistence rather than linear replacement.

Why is tiering admin accounts so critical?

Because workstations are compromised routinely, and admin credentials that touched a compromised box inherit that box's compromise; tiering limits credential exposure per trust boundary and is the closest thing to a vaccination schedule the directory has.

What is LAPS and why does it matter?

Windows LAPS manages unique local admin passwords per machine, rotated and stored in AD or Entra, eliminating the shared-password nightmare; one stale shared local-admin password is a classic lateral movement path.

What are the basics of AD monitoring?

Replication health, security event logs (4624/4625, 4768/4769 class tickets), privileged group membership changes, and time sync; configure a SIEM or Wazuh class collector early (our wazuh article covers the open-source option).
