Linux Storage Stack and NVMe-oF

The Linux storage stack (block layer, I/O schedulers, filesystems, LVM, mdraid) determines how fast and reliably data moves between application and disk. NVMe-oF extends NVMe over fabric (TCP or RDMA), delivering remote storage at near-local latency. Together they enable disaggregated storage, but only if each layer is tuned for the workload and the fabric is engineered for low latency.

Key points

  • The block layer (blk-mq) handles multi-queue I/O; NVMe devices use it natively, SATA uses it via SCSI translation.
  • I/O schedulers (none, mq-deadline, bfq, kyber) matter for SATA and HDD; NVMe usually runs 'none' for lowest latency.
  • Filesystem choice (ext4, XFS, btrfs, ZFS) affects metadata performance, snapshots, and data integrity; match to workload.
  • LVM and mdraid add flexibility (snapshots, RAID) at a small latency cost; ZFS combines volume management and filesystem.
  • NVMe-oF (TCP or RDMA) delivers remote NVMe at ~10-100us latency, enabling storage disaggregation and independent scaling.
  • RDMA (RoCE/InfiniBand) gives lowest latency; TCP is simpler and works on standard Ethernet with slightly higher latency.
  • Tune queue depths, read-ahead, and I/O scheduler per device; defaults are conservative and rarely optimal.
  • Monitor with iostat, blktrace, and nvme-cli; latency percentiles matter more than average throughput.

Frequently asked questions

NVMe-oF or iSCSI?

NVMe-oF for new builds: lower latency, simpler protocol, better NVMe feature support. iSCSI for legacy compatibility.

RDMA or TCP transport?

RDMA for lowest latency and highest IOPS; TCP for simpler ops and standard Ethernet. Many start with TCP and move to RDMA if needed.

ZFS or LVM+ext4?

ZFS for data integrity, snapshots, and simplicity; LVM+ext4 for lighter weight and broader tooling support.

How do I find I/O bottlenecks?

Check iostat %util and await; high await with low throughput indicates queue or latency issues, not bandwidth.
