Field notes

The economics of personal security favor a tiny set of moves with outsized returns: unique passwords via a manager, two-factor on email, and offline backups. Everything else, VPNs, specialty apps, advanced settings, matters less than those three done consistently across the household. Start there, and start this weekend.

Schools fail at security the same way small businesses do: nobody owns it. The fix costs little, a named responsible adult, filtered DNS, managed updates, MFA on staff accounts, offline backups of the student system, but it has to be written down with names and dates, or the semester will eat it.

Talk about incidents out loud. Families and schools that discuss scams, breaches, and near-misses without shame build the only defense that scales with attackers: human pattern recognition. Every quiet victim is a lesson nobody else gets to learn from.
