Bare Metal vs Cloud Deployments

Bare metal and cloud are not rivals; they are different cost and control curves. Cloud wins when elasticity, speed of provisioning, and managed services matter more than unit cost. Bare metal wins when workloads are steady, latency-sensitive, or large enough that per-hour pricing becomes punishing. Most mature estates run both, and the real skill is knowing which workload belongs where and how to move between them without a rewrite.

Points clés

  1. Cloud fits bursty, experimental, or short-lived workloads where provisioning speed beats unit cost.
  2. Bare metal fits steady, high-utilization workloads where committed hardware beats hourly billing by a wide margin.
  3. Latency-sensitive and I/O-heavy systems often prefer bare metal for predictable performance and direct hardware access.
  4. Managed cloud services (databases, queues, identity) can save more engineering time than compute savings cost.
  5. Hybrid is normal: cloud for elasticity and managed services, bare metal for steady hot paths.
  6. Data gravity decides placement: move compute to data, not data to compute, when transfer costs dominate.
  7. Benchmark both on identical workloads before committing; synthetic cloud benchmarks rarely match production shapes.
  8. Plan exit paths at entry: keep images and IaC portable so a later move is a project, not a rewrite.

Questions fréquentes

Is bare metal cheaper than cloud?

For steady high-utilization workloads, yes, often by 3-5x. For bursty or low-utilization workloads, cloud's pay-per-use wins.

Can we start in cloud and move to bare metal later?

Yes if you kept images, IaC, and state portable. The cost is in data egress and re-plumbing, not in the compute itself.

Which is faster to provision?

Cloud: minutes. Bare metal: hours to days depending on vendor and automation. Factor this into incident response planning.

Do we need both?

Most mature estates do. The question is not either/or but which workload goes where, reviewed quarterly as usage patterns change.
