ZFS Boot Environments on FreeBSD
A ZFS boot environment is a snapshot of the root dataset that can be activated at boot. Upgrades become reversible operations: snapshot, upgrade, test, and roll back by selecting the previous environment. This turns risky system changes into a routine with a known recovery path.
Points clés
- Snapshot the root dataset before every upgrade and give the environment a descriptive name.
- Keep at least one known-good environment that is never modified.
- Automate environment creation in the upgrade runbook so it is not skipped under pressure.
- Test the rollback path, including boot loader entries, before you need it.
- Prune old environments on a schedule so the pool does not fill silently.
- Separate user data from the root dataset so rollbacks do not touch application state.
- Verify that jails and services start correctly after activation.
- Monitor pool capacity, since a full pool can break snapshot and rollback operations.
Questions fréquentes
Does rollback delete my data?
Rolling back the root environment does not affect separate data datasets, but verify your layout first.
Can I boot an old environment read-only?
Yes, which is useful for investigation without changing state.
How many environments should I keep?
Enough to cover the last known-good release and one previous version, pruned by policy.
Does this replace backups?
No. Snapshots live on the same pool and do not protect against hardware loss.
