BSD Distributions & High-Security/Storage Networking

FreeBSD Jails vs. Containerization

Jails partition a FreeBSD system into isolated environments that share the kernel but have their own filesystem, processes, and optionally network stack. They predate Linux containers and remain lighter than full virtual machines. VNET and thin provisioning make them practical for multi-tenant services, though the tooling ecosystem is smaller.

Points clés

  1. Use VNET when a jail needs its own network stack and firewall rules.
  2. Thin-provision jail filesystems from a shared base to save space and speed creation.
  3. Apply resource limits through RCTL so one jail cannot exhaust host memory or CPU.
  4. Keep the host base system patched, since jails share its kernel.
  5. Manage jails declaratively with a tool that records configuration and lifecycle.
  6. Restrict jail privileges and mount points to the minimum the service requires.
  7. Test upgrade paths for both host and jail userlands, which can drift apart.
  8. Monitor per-jail resource use and log it alongside application metrics.

Questions fréquentes

Are jails as isolated as VMs?

No. They share the kernel, so a kernel exploit can cross boundaries.

Can jails run Linux binaries?

Yes through the Linux compatibility layer, with limitations.

Why use jails instead of Docker?

Lower overhead and tight integration with ZFS and FreeBSD networking, at the cost of ecosystem size.

Do jails need separate IP addresses?

Only with VNET or specific network configurations; classic jails can share the host address.
