Infrastructure as Code with Terraform and OpenTofu
Infrastructure as code turns server and cloud setup into versioned, reviewable files instead of click-ops and tribal knowledge. Terraform and its open fork OpenTofu let you describe networks, compute, storage, and DNS in one language, plan the diff before applying it, and roll back through Git when something breaks.

- Keep all infrastructure definitions in Git with pull requests and review before any apply.
- Run terraform plan in CI on every change and block merges on unexpected diffs.
- Split state by environment and blast radius so one mistake cannot take down production.
- Use remote state with locking (S3 plus DynamoDB, or equivalent) and never commit state files.
- Pin provider and module versions and upgrade on a schedule, not by accident.
- Parameterize with variables and workspaces instead of copy-pasted environments.
- Import existing resources before rewriting them so nothing gets recreated by surprise.
- Test modules with terratest or policy checks before they reach production.

How do you handle secrets in IaC?
Never store them in code. Use a secrets manager and inject at apply time through variables or dynamic references.

For anything repeatable, yes. Emergency hotfixes get back-ported into code the next day so drift does not accumulate.
How long does a first IaC rollout take?
A small estate can be codified in days; large legacy estates take weeks of importing and verification.
