Semantic Versioning for Prompts
Prompts are production code that changes behavior, cost, and quality, yet they are often edited in place with no history. Semantic versioning gives prompts a contract: major for behavior changes, minor for additions, patch for wording. Combined with eval gates, it makes prompt changes reviewable, reversible, and safe to ship.
Vigtige pointer
- Store prompts in version control, not in dashboards or databases alone.
- Bump major when output behavior or schema changes.
- Bump minor when adding capability without breaking existing callers.
- Bump patch for wording or formatting tweaks with no behavior change.
- Tag each version with its eval results and model used.
- Require eval pass before promoting a new prompt version.
- Keep a changelog of what changed and why.
- Roll back by version, not by memory.
Ofte stillede spørgsmål
Do prompts really need semver?
Yes once more than one caller or one developer depends on the output.
How do I handle model upgrades?
Treat a model change as a major version bump and re-run evals.
Where should prompts live?
In the repo next to the code that calls them, versioned together.
Can I A/B test prompt versions?
Yes, route traffic by version and compare on your real metric.
